Ivo Pogorelich is among the most provocative pianists on the modern scene, known for entirely original interpretations that may be ungrounded in the notation of the work being played.Spotify
At the top of his powers, he can impart rhythmic drive and intensity matched by few other players. Pogorelich (originally Pogorelić, and still spelled that way at times) was born in Belgrade, then in Yugoslavia, on October 20, 1958.Spotify
His father was Croatian, his mother Serbian, and he took Croatian citizenship after the dissolution of Yugoslavia in 1991. Pogorelich took up the piano at age seven, studying in Belgrade until his extraordinary talent was recognized; at 12, he moved to Moscow for studies at the Central Music School, and he later earned a degree from the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. Pogorelich's most important teacher was Aliza Kezeradze, who had been a student of Alexander Siloti; he, in turn, was a student of Liszt.Spotify
The two married, despite their age difference of more than 20 years (Kezeradze died in 1996). Pogorelich won several competitions before entering the prestigious International Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 1980. He was eliminated in the third round, prompting the resignation from the prize jury by one of his backers, pianist Martha Argerich.Spotify
Pogorelich made his debut at Carnegie Hall in 1981 and was signed to the Deutsche Grammophon label the following year, making his debut with a well-regarded recording of Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No. 6 in A major, Op. 82.Spotify
Over the 1980s and '90s, he played concertos with most of the world's major orchestras and gave numerous recitals. At the peak of his fame, he quipped that someone would write a review if he simply dusted off his piano. To aid younger pianists, Pogorelich established an Ivo Pogorelich Foundation in Croatia (1989) and an Ivo Pogorelich Piano Competition in California (1993).Spotify
He was also unusually active in charitable causes, mounting relief concerts for the citizens of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War in the early '90s. Pogorelich continued to record for Deutsche Grammophon; critical responses to his recordings were mixed, but he enjoyed strong sales and public enthusiasm. His schedule slowed in the 2000s and 2010s decades, and although a complete set of his Deutsche Grammophon performances was issued in 2015, he made no new recordings between 2012 and 2019; in the latter year, he released an album of Beethoven and Rachmaninov piano sonatas.Spotify
That album appeared on the Sony Classical label. In 2021, he toured with the Basel Kammerorchester, and in 2022, he issued the recital album Chopin on Sony Classical. Pogorelich's schedule for that year was busy, with recital appearances set for Croatia, many western European countries, the U.S., and Canada.Spotify

Movement
20th-century classical · Wikipedia
20th-century classical music is Western art music that was written between 1901 and 2000, inclusive. Musical style diverged during the 20th century as it never had previously, so this century was without a dominant style. Modernism, impressionism, and post-romanticism can all be traced to the decades before the turn of the 20th century, but can be included because they evolved beyond the musical boundaries of the 19th-century styles that were part of the earlier common practice period. neoclassicism and expressionism came mostly after 1900. Minimalism started later in the century and can be seen as a change from the modern to postmodern era, although some date postmodernism from as early as about 1930. Aleatory, atonality, serialism, musique concrète, and electronic music were all developed during the century. Jazz and ethnic folk music became important influences on many composers during this century.

20th-century classical listening cues: variety and experimentation. Some music keeps older forms (neoclassicism) but with sharper harmonies, leaner textures, and motoric rhythms.
Other strands move toward atonality (no clear tonal center) or explore new scales and sonorities; rhythm can become more complex, more mechanical, or more jagged.
Timbre and texture are often treated as structural elements: changes in sound color can function like 'harmonic' events.
A practical way to listen: instead of expecting a 'tune', track motives (tiny cells), rhythm, and register. Modern pieces often build form by transforming small units rather than by long melodies.
Minimalism is another common thread: repetition, gradual change, and a focus on pulse and process over long spans.

Modern/contemporary music varies wildly, but you will often hear experimentation with harmony, rhythm, and sound color as primary material.
Some strands emphasize rhythmic bite and sharp contrasts; others explore timbre and atmosphere; minimalism builds from repeating patterns and gradual change.
If the music feels less about singable melody and more about texture, pulse, or color, you are probably hearing a modern idiom.
