Venice – a beautiful city in northern Italy famous for tourism and industry. Some of its popular names include: “La Dominante”, “Serenissima”, “Queen of the Adriatic”, “City of Water”, “City of Masks”, “City of Bridges”, “The Floating City”, and “City of Canals”. Many describe it as “The most beautiful city built by man”. Venice has also been described as one of the Europe’s most romantic cities. Adding to its beauty is the transportation system which is one of a kind in the world. There are absolutely no vehicles or roads in the city and transportation is based entirely on either foot or water. It is deemed as the Europe’s largest car free area. Its rich and diverse architecture gives it an even more beautiful and influential style.
Venice is believed to be founded in around 421 AD. Signs of democracy in the city dates back to year 697. It has a long history of invasion and struggle and was invaded by Napoleon and Austrians at different times. It also escaped heavy bombing during World wars.
Today, there are various attractions in Venice, like St Mark’s Basilica, the Grand Canal, and the Piazza San Marco. The Lido di Venezia is another popular international luxury destination, attracting numerous actors, critics, celebrities, and mainly people in the cinematic industry. The city also boasts of a great cruise business.
Venice has also been famous for its music. It has played a really important role in the development of music in Italy and was quite rightly dubbed as the Republic of Music. It was home for some of really famous music composers including Antonio Vivaldi, Ippolito Ciera, Giovanni Picchi and Girolamo Dalla Casa.
Venice has also been a source of inspiration to some of the greatest authors. Venice’s most famous writers were Marco Polo in the Middle Ages and then Giacomo Casnova. It also inspired authors across the globe like Shakespeare.
In recent times Venice was hit by a number of problems. It being a really popular tourist destination does become really overcrowded at many points of the year. The cruise ships operating in the Giudecca Canal sends out large waves toward the city which over the time is causing the city to sink. Also, foreigner’s competition to buy homes in Venice has resulted in dramatic increase in prices. This has forced many inhabitants to move out to more affordable areas of Italy.
